Zrće is not a problem for Novalja.

Zrće is its most recognizable tourism product and one of the few Croatian tourism brands with strong international visibility. The real question is therefore not whether Novalja should escape its image as a party destination, but how to use the strength of Zrće to develop higher quality, more diverse and long-term sustainable tourism.

And this has been done for years through the development of gastronomic and outdoor offers and content. This year's tourism results show that exactly such a transformation was well received on the market.

Novalja achieved its millionth commercial overnight stay earlier than last year, with around 177.000 arrivals recorded by the end of July, four percent more than in the same period in 2025, while around 23.000 guests stayed in the city area during the peak season.

Zrće continues to be a strong generator of tourist traffic. It is estimated that around 900.000 visitors will pass through the famous Novalja beach this year, with more than 15 festivals during the season. But more important than the numbers themselves is the change in the structure of the offer and the habits of guests.

Marina Šćiran: Zrće remains an important part of the identity, but Novalja offers a much broader tourism story

Director of the Novalja Tourist Board Marina Šćiran points out that the current results confirm good preparation for the season, but also the destination's ability to respond to changes in the originating markets.

The traditional markets of Germany, Austria and Italy are feeling the impact of economic circumstances and different travel habits, while Novalja is simultaneously recording growth in the domestic and Polish markets. The United Kingdom stands out in particular, with an increase in overnight stays of as much as 83 percent, strongly contributed by festival programs and the sold-out Hideout Festival with more than 12.000 visitors.

It is precisely these data that confirm the importance of the event as a concrete motive for coming. A festival is not just an entertainment program, but a tourism product that generates arrivals, overnight stays, spending and international visibility of the destination.

Šćiran also emphasizes that visitors connected to Zrće make up approximately half of Novalja's total tourist traffic. The other half are families, active tourists, and guests motivated by beaches, nature, gastronomy, culture, and local stories. This is an important message because Novalja is not exclusively a party destination, although Zrće is its most globally famous symbol.

Zrće does not renounce its party identity, but rather builds on it.

One of the biggest news this season is the completely renovated Kalypso, the oldest club on Zrće, opened in 1987. After a major investment, the club has received a contemporary design, more modern production, an expanded space and a pool around which daily programs are developed. In addition to Kalypso, Zrće's offer includes Papaya, Aquarius, Nomad and Symbol, and a new group of concessionaires has initiated a wider transformation of the space and facilities on the beach.

The key change is not only aesthetic. Clubs no longer wait for the night to open their tourism product. The program is being developed throughout the day, through quieter period on Zrće beach until 4:00 p.m. with pools, the sea, gastronomy and afternoon events, followed by evening concerts and festival programs.

If we look at the bigger picture, it changes experience economy Zrća.

At the same time, the way space is used is changing. The beach is no longer active only for a few evening and night hours, but is gaining a new function and a new audience during the day. This temporal layering of content is one way of increasing the value of existing tourist infrastructure without necessarily increasing the physical capacity of the space.

Selling only a night out means having a time-limited product and relying on one dominant motive of arrival. The development of daily content, sports, gastronomy and recreation increases the time the guest spends at the location, widens the circle of potential users and opens up space for greater tourist consumption.

That is the correct direction of development.

Generation Z is changing the rules of the tourism game

The changes on Zrće did not happen by chance. The tourism market is changing, as is the generation of guests who come to Novalja today.

Young travelers still want music, socializing, and festivals, but their vacation is no longer limited to a night out and alcohol consumption.

Of course, there is no single profile of a young guest, but the market trend clearly shows that entertainment increasingly needs to be part of a broader experience. A guest who goes to a festival in the evening wants a quality space, well-maintained beaches, attractive daily facilities and activities during the day - which perfectly complements Novalja's outdoor content, good food, seaside content and the opportunity to explore the destination.

This is where the opportunity arises to turn part of the festival demand into broader tourism value.

That is why the future development of Zrće includes padel courts, an outdoor gym, and volleyball facilities on the beach and in the sea. Such investments are not just an addition to the club's offer, they are a response to a changing market. Tourism must follow the guest, but at the same time it must know in which direction it wants to develop. If the new generation is looking for a combination of entertainment, sports, gastronomy, and nature, then the destination must combine these elements into a meaningful and market-recognizable product.

Beach management is just as important as the festival program

With the arrival of the new concessionaire, the cleanliness of Zrće has improved and the number of facilities that occupied the space intended for swimmers has been reduced. Until approximately 16 pm, the beach operates at a calmer pace, without loud club music, after which the daytime and evening programs gradually begin.

It may seem like an operational decision, but it is a good example of managing space and different user groups. Such decisions are often more important than new promotional campaigns. A destination develops not only through what it communicates to the market, but also through the way it organizes space, determines the rules of use and aligns the interests of guests, entrepreneurs and residents. Or, more simply and clearly, managing the guest experience begins with managing the space in which that experience takes place.

Tourism space is not an unlimited resource. If one type of content completely displaces all others, the destination becomes dependent on just one market segment. Balancing the needs of swimmers, families, recreationalists, caterers, festival guests and the local community is therefore the foundation of sustainable management.

Zrće can be a quality beach during the day, a place for active relaxation and socializing in the afternoon, and an international festival stage in the evening. It is precisely in this multifunctionality that its greatest development opportunity lies.

Zrće attracts guests, but Novalja must maintain their spending

The biggest challenge for Novalja is not attracting guests. Zrće has been doing this successfully for decades. The challenge is to motivate guests to explore the rest of the destination, stay longer and spread their spending among a larger number of local stakeholders.

To do this, it is not enough to simply offer a list of additional amenities. It is necessary to connect accommodation, transportation, events, outdoor activities, gastronomy and cultural offerings into concrete itineraries and commercially available packages. The guest should not just discover on their own how to get from Zrće to a kayak tour, a local restaurant, an ancient waterworks or some other location on the island. Connecting these points is the job of destination management.

Programs like this play an important role. Pag Summer Outdoor, which brings hiking tours, kayaking, SUP and other activities to various locations on the island during August and September. Sveti Vid, Stara Novalja, Caska, Sveti Duh and numerous Pag landscapes thus become part of a unique destination product.

Novalja also offers theatre performances by the Novalja Triatr, concerts, cinema under the stars, exhibitions, children's programmes, workshops and guided tours that reveal the ancient aqueduct and the historical development of the city. This is the right direction for the destination and it is not enough to have a large number of events. They need to be strategically linked, clearly communicated and transformed into products that guests can easily find, book and buy. Only then does the festival guest become a guest of the entire destination.

The development of local gastronomy is equally important. Projects such as MarsSheep, which we have already written about on HrTurizma, show how a destination can connect tourism with local agriculture, tradition and the identity of the island. Pag lamb, Pag cheese and authentic local products are not just an additional offer, but a motive for coming, a reason for greater tourist spending and one of the key elements that raises the quality of the destination.

It is precisely through the connection of tourism with local OPGs and producers that most of the tourism value remains in the local economy.

Investments in quality accommodation increase the value of the destination

This year's season was also marked by the opening of the completely renovated Liberty S hotel, once the first hotel built in Novalja.

The Novalja-based company Prudentia is behind the reconstruction and expansion of the former Hotel Liberty. The hotel reopened in June 2026 as the four-star Liberty S Hotel Resort & Spa, and the hotel has 310 beds, a wellness center, indoor and outdoor pools, and spaces for business and private events.

Such investments are important because raising the quality of a destination cannot rest only on events. Quality accommodation infrastructure, gastronomy, public space, transport accessibility and professional management of the destination are needed.

Such a content structure creates the prerequisites for business outside the peak summer season, especially through wellness, business events, groups and private programs. For Novalja, the development of accommodation products that are not exclusively tied to July and August is one of the important prerequisites for extending the season.

Novalja has an important competitive advantage in transport connectivity.

The destination is connected by an international catamaran line to Pesaro, a daily line to Rijeka, a ferry via Žigljen and by road via the Pag Bridge. Additional accessibility is created by the maritime connections of Luna with Rab and the Crikvenica Riviera. Accessibility is one of the fundamental elements of competitiveness, especially for guests who make last-minute decisions and expect a simple trip without additional logistical complications.

From counting guests to measuring the value of tourism

Growth in arrivals and overnight stays is certainly a positive indicator, although it is not the only measure of a destination's success. For Novalja, it is more important to monitor average guest spending, length of stay, use of facilities outside Zrće, local population satisfaction, infrastructure load, quality of jobs and the share of local entrepreneurs involved in the tourism value chain.

The real transformation occurs when the strong tourist traffic of Zrće spills over to restaurants, excursion programs, local producers, outdoor guides, cultural content and other parts of Novalja and the island of Pag, which is the essence of destination management.

Zrće already has what many Croatian destinations have been trying to build for years: an internationally recognizable brand and a clear reason to come. This capital should not be diminished, but rather managed well. The new phase of development does not mean giving up party tourism. It means upgrading it, better spatial and temporal distribution of content, and connecting it with the rest of the destination, which everyone in Novalja is obviously aware of, as confirmed by this year's transformation of the most famous Croatian party beach.

Zrće remains a stage for world-class DJs, while Novalja simultaneously develops active, family, cultural, gastronomic and sustainable tourism. These two identities are not opposed. When managed strategically, their combination can become the greatest competitive advantage of a destination.

Because a strong brand attracts the guest, but quality management of the destination creates a reason for the guest to stay, spend more and return again.
