Istria County becomes a member of the Global Council for Sustainable Tourism

The County of Istria joined the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), a leading international organization that sets global standards for sustainable tourism.

With this membership, Istria confirms its determination for a strategic orientation towards the responsible and sustainable development of tourism in the coming period, according to pages Istrian County.

As a region with a strong identity, rich cultural and natural heritage, Istria has been developing tourism for decades, which in future development will be more focused on achieving balance between tourism growth and the quality of life of the local population.

Through the implementation of two Tourism Master Plans (2004-2012 and 2015-2025), as well as the development of a new one for the period 2026-2035, a destination focused on quality, sustainability and long-term resilience is being systematically developed.

A special breakthrough was achieved revitalization of central Istria, where young people were encouraged to stay, agricultural production was renewed and agritourism was developed. Today, Istria strongly connects tourism with local production and tradition, developing eno-gastronomy, family accommodation and authentic experiences.

With around 5 million arrivals and 30 million overnight stays per year, which accounts for approximately a third of total Croatian tourist traffic, Istria shows how Success is not measured solely by numbers., but also by the satisfaction of the local population and the quality of the visitor experience.

Mayor Boris Miletić pointed out that membership in GSTC represents a direction towards future development guided by responsibility, preservation of identity and long-term vision, in which tourism protects space, valorizes heritage and ensures a quality life for citizens.

The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) is an international non-profit organization registered in the United States of America, with its headquarters in Washington, which develops and manages global standards of sustainability in tourism.

The GSTC criteria represent guidelines and minimum requirements for destinations, hotels, tour operators, event organizers and tourist attractions, with the aim of protecting natural and cultural resources and encouraging responsible tourism management.

The Council does not conduct direct certification, but accredits certification bodies that confirm compliance with international sustainability standards.

The organization brings together governments, tourism companies, hotels, NGOs and experts around the world, promoting best practices and cooperation in the development of sustainable tourism.
