Great news: Slovenia has lifted border controls with Croatia

The Slovenian government has lifted temporary controls at the internal Schengen borders with Croatia and Hungary, once again allowing the free passage of passengers and vehicles without regular stops at the border.

The decision was made at a session of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia on June 11, and Ljubljana says that the controls will not be extended because there is no longer a basis for such a form of surveillance. Instead of classic controls at border crossings, the Slovenian police will implement enhanced compensatory measures along the border and in the interior of the country, based on security assessments and risk analysis.

Slovenia introduced temporary controls at the border with Croatia and Hungary on October 21, 2023, as a temporary measure within Schengen, in the context of the deteriorating security situation and migratory pressures.

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia Andrej Plenković also welcomed the decision, pointing out that it enables the full application of the free passage zone for vehicles and passengers within Schengen and the continuation of cooperation between Croatia and Slovenia in the fight against illegal migration and criminal activities.

The lifting of controls is also important for tourist traffic, especially ahead of the main part of the summer season, as it should facilitate the flow of passengers to Croatia and reduce the possibility of congestion on the most frequent entry routes from Slovenia to Croatian destinations.
