Ferries in Stockholm have traditionally played an important role in public transport, as the city lies on an archipelago of more than a dozen islands. However, despite this geographical advantage, waterborne public transport has so far had a relatively small share of the total number of passengers. This is primarily due to the slowness of the lines and the limited number of departures, while at the same time ferries produce almost half of the total emissions coming from the transport system.
