The global tourism sector continues to grow steadily and recover from the pandemic period, and the latest data from the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) confirms that international tourism spending is once again reaching record levels.

According to the latest Economic Impact Research (EIR), conducted by WTTC with support from Chase Travel as lead research partner, global spending by international visitors in 2025 she reached $ 2,02 trillionThe word is about a growth of 3,2% compared to the previous year and the first result that exceeds the levels achieved before the pandemic.

Although many markets are recording growth, WTTC particularly highlights Spain as one of the most successful destinations in the segment of so-called high-value tourism.

Spain among global leaders in tourism spending

According to WTTC, Spain generated 115,1 billion euros in international tourism spending in 2025, or around 130,1 billion US dollars. This positioned it as the world's third largest market in terms of spending by international visitors, right behind of the United States of America i Kine.

At the same time, Spain maintained its status as the leading European destination in terms of international tourist spending.

WTTC estimates that the country achieved 96,8 million international arrivals, while the average spending per traveler was around 1.344 US dollars. For comparison, the average spending by international travelers at the European level is estimated at around 1.068 US dollars per trip.

Such data confirms a trend that has become increasingly pronounced in European tourism in recent years. The focus is no longer solely on the volume of arrivals, but also on creating greater added value per guest.

Investing in passenger experience as a strategic advantage

The WTTC report specifically highlights how Spain's success is based on long-term investments in connectivity, transport infrastructure and improving the overall customer experience throughout the journey. It also highlights the importance of strong public-private sector collaboration and continued institutional support for the tourism sector.

According to WTTC estimates, international tourism spending in Spain could during 2026 further increase to 121,1 billion euros, which would represent annual growth of 5,3%.

The report states that destinations that manage to reduce "friction" during travel will be in the best position to attract a new generation of international travelers. These include investments in digital identities, biometric technologies at borders, more efficient visa systems, and greater regional connectivity that facilitates multi-destination travel.

WTTC warns that Passenger experience is becoming one of the key factors in the competitiveness of a destination, just as important as the tourist offer itself.

High-value tourism is becoming a key trend

President and CEO of WTTC Gloria Guevara She pointed out that global data shows the resilience of the sector, but also an increasingly pronounced shift towards higher-value tourism.

"International visitor spending has now surpassed pre-pandemic levels globally, reaching more than US$2 trillion in 2025, a strong signal of the sector's resilience and continued growth", Guevara said. She added that "the real story is the increase in high-value travel," with Spain exceeding the European average in tourism spending per traveler.

"Spain surpasses the European average in international visitor spending per traveler, demonstrating how investing in connectivity, seamless travel and visitor experience can translate into stronger economic returns", said Guevara. WTTC also points out that Spain has one of the strongest ratios of international to domestic tourism spending in the world, further confirming its global competitiveness.

Focus on quality instead of just numbers

The WTTC data further confirm the changes that have been increasingly present in global tourism in recent years. More and more destinations are trying to attract guests with higher paying power through investments in infrastructure, sustainability, digitization and a better user experience.

The model being developed by Spain shows how high tourist traffic and high consumption They do not necessarily have to be opposing goals, but rather part of the same development strategy.

For the tourism sector, especially in Europe, the question is no longer just how to increase the number of arrivals, but how to better destination management achieve greater economic value and long-term sustainability of tourism.
