Pula has been facing a significant shortage of parking spaces for years, especially in the city center and during the tourist season. The city is currently implementing a series of measures to alleviate this problem through infrastructure projects and a new charging system.
The project for a large garage house on Marsovo Polje was abandoned due to excessive costs and legal obstacles.
Instead, open parking lots are being built and developed, including the one on Vrtlarska Street with more than 100 spaces, while an additional 180 to 200 parking spaces are planned on Marsovo Polje.
The project value is almost one million euros
As stated on the City's website, the implementation of new parking capacities at several locations is underway, and the first works are expected soon. These are projects that should alleviate the long-standing problem of a lack of parking spaces, especially during the tourist season.
When asked by councilor Igor Belas about plans to expand parking capacities, the mayor Pedja Grbin He pointed out that the process of realizing a new parking lot in Vrtlarska Street is underway.
The project is being implemented as part of the construction of a connecting road between Mutilska Street and Marsovog Polje Street, and its total value is almost one million euros. The construction of more than 100 new parking spaces is planned, which will significantly relieve traffic in that part of the city.
Work begins in May
As explained, after the completion of the public procurement procedure and the expiration of the appeals deadline, the work is expected to begin in May. Special attention will be paid to the organization of the work in order to avoid greater traffic congestion during the summer months.
In addition to this project, the City of Pula is also planning to further expand parking capacities. Through the company Pulaparking participates in procedures related to the management of parking areas in the Riva area, while the development of a large parking lot with around 180 to 200 spaces is being considered for the Marsovo polje location.
For that location, the arrangement of the space in accordance with sustainable principles was announced, including the greening of surfaces, planting of trees and the introduction of solar lighting.
Although there are plans to increase capacity, the problem in the center itself remains pronounced due to the historic core, which does not allow for the expansion of classic parking spaces.
New zone system, benefits for citizens and smart solutions
In order to reduce parking problems, the City has introduced four new parking zones. The key innovation is Zone "0" (blue zone) in the old town core, which is intended exclusively for residents to ensure they have spaces close to their homes.
Benefits for citizens have also been announced in the form of the introduction of 1.000 free hours parking spaces annually for the residents of Pula to facilitate their access to services in the city despite the high prices for tourists.
At certain locations, such as those near the Arena, the parking method has also been changed (from diagonal to lateral) to comply with regulations, although this sometimes results in fewer spaces at specific micro-locations.
Smart solutions and control are also being introduced. The Pula parking company plans to implement smart systems for occupancy monitoring to reduce the time spent looking for parking.
