The European Commission has launched a new €6,9 million fund to strengthen the competitiveness of the tourism sector in Europe. The program targets small and medium-sized enterprises in the tourism sector, including hotels, and focuses on the digital transformation, sustainability and resilience of the tourism ecosystem.

The European Commission has launched a new call for projects aimed at strengthening the sustainable competitiveness of European tourism, with a total budget of €6,9 million. The initiative is part of the programme Single Market Program (SMP-COSME), and its goal is to help tourism businesses, including the hotel sector, transition towards a more sustainable, digital and resilient business model.

The program is intended primarily small and medium-sized enterprises in tourism, but also to organizations that support destination development, such as DMOs and various business organizations. The projects will be implemented through international partnerships and consortia from several European countries, with the aim of developing innovative tourism products and strengthening the competitiveness of the sector.

Individual projects can receive between 1,2 and 1,4 million euros, and is expected to last between 30 and 48 months. The focus of funding will be on projects that contribute to the green transition, digitalization of business and strengthening the resilience of the tourism sector to market and climate challenges.

Although the program is open to a wide range of tourism stakeholders, analysts point out that the hotel sector could be among the key beneficiaries such funds, especially when it comes to investments in digital tools, sustainable resource management and the development of new tourism products.

This fund is part of a broader European strategy for the transformation of tourism, which aims to accelerate the sector's transition towards a more sustainable and innovative development model. The European Union has been supporting tourism for years through various funding programmes, but new instruments increasingly emphasize digitalization, climate resilience and cooperation within the tourism ecosystem.

For tourist destinations and companies across Europe, this also means a new opportunity to develop projects that connect technology, sustainability and new tourism products, which could help the sector adapt to market changes and traveler expectations.
